Why We Bought a Ford Flex
This post is not sponsored by Ford. These are my honest opinions about this wonderful vehicle.
I don’t know how many of you have any experience purchasing a vehicle when a family member has limited mobility but let me tell you, it was quite a challenge. This is the story of why we bought a Ford Flex and I want to yell it from the rooftops.
For Christmas of 2012 my Goddaughter came to visit with us and it ended up being a long term move. She is a beautiful vibrant 20 something who happens to have CP and does most of her public moving around via a wheelchair. With her addition, we became a family of 6. Our aging minivan would accommodate all of us but getting in was a bit of a struggle for her.
Car shopping
Since it would be time to replace the current vehicle soon, we made it our goal to find the vehicle that we could all fit into, She could get into easily, and would fit the wheelchair. You wouldn’t think that would be too much to ask but boy the search felt like looking for a unicorn in a field of ponies. It just so happened that in the following January Charleston was having its annual car show, so we decided that would be the best place to start.
We tried out every single 3 row vehicle there, SUVs and minivans alike. As we went from vehicle to vehicle, I kept praying that the Lord would have the perfect car for us. After several hours and much disappointment we walked into the final collection of vehicles, the Fords. Sitting in the middle, on display, was a beautiful beast of a car. It was decked out in a two tone paint job, had beautiful slick lines, a low stance, lights underneath and a sunroof.
I said “Oh, there’s momma’s car! I don’t know what you guys wanna ride in but I’ll take this.” While getting in to check it out and I notice it has a third row seat. Then I yell, “Hey! See if you can get in this one.” Now, at this point she was pretty tired and quite put off after trying to get into all of those other SUVs and minivans, but she as always was agreeable.
Finding the Unicorn
She wheeled up to the large and accommodating truck style doors and doubtfully examined the height of the seat. “Here goes nothing.” Much to her surprise, not only were the doors heavy enough for her to easily pull herself to a standing position, but the seat was low enough for her to easily transfer to. She let out such an exclamation that I’m sure that whole section of the auto show could hear it. “Ahhhhhhhhh!!!! We found it! We found the unicorn!” There was one last test. My husband folded up the wheelchair and placed it in the back. Since the back end is squared instead of being rounded off like many of the SUVs that we looked at, the chair fit and the door easily closed without even touching the chair.
After some planning and patience, we did obtain our beautiful unicorn. It has been a blessing to us beyond expectation. I like to tell people that it serves all our vehicular needs because God provides, but that it’s awesome because he loves us.
So, thank you Ford, for making our Ford Flex! Please continue to make these wonderful vehicles that serve families like ours. It truly has been a godsend.
