Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won Game of the Year,Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Game Direction in 2017. Let’s just go ahead and get this out if the way. This is probably the most epic game I’ve ever played. Keep in mind that before starting this game I had just finished Final Fantasy 15. I loved that game and don’t even want to talk about how many hours I dedicated to playing it lol. I’ve played most of the time on this game on the Wii U but from what I can tell, the game play isn’t terribly different on the Switch.  One minor thing that I’ve run across is that on the Wii U while using the Link Amibo I’ve yet to score Epona.  On the Switch however I got her the very first time I used the Amibo.

The Vastness of it all

The game itself is incredibly beautiful and at the beginning I spent half my time gawking at things like the grass blowing in the wind or the butterflies fluttering off as I approached them.  This is also one of the biggest games out there and what is the most mind blowing part is the fact that you can explore just about every square inch.  And you’d better because otherwise you’ll never find all those Korok seeds. Even after beating the main quest line I still had less that 50% of the game completed and I’m not the type of person to shy away from side quests.

Game Play

In this game you will fight enemies, solve puzzles, collect items and cook ingredients. The difficulty of the enemies varies greatly throughout the game. Many of them are susceptible to particular elemental attacks so it’s good to have a variety of weapons and armor. Link is pretty easy to control once you get the hang of it but there can be tricky places especially in certain puzzles and dungeons where the controls are a little more difficult to fine tune.

Open world

Once you make your way off the Great Plateau this is truly an open world. If so inclined you may go right up to the castle and attempt to battle Calamity Ganon. You will more than likely get your butt handed to you but you’re welcome to try. This non-linear type of game play encourages you to conquer the game in your own fashion. The things that will limit your exploration most will be the temperature of the area, the amount of stamina it might take to get there, and the strength of the enemies.
