Sweet Girly Baby Quilt
Sweet Girly Baby Quilt
I don’t know about you guys, but as a person who has been sewing for years I’ve accumulated quite a stash of fabrics. I bought this gorgeous baby fabric about 7 years ago with the intention of making a quilt or other baby item. Every time one of my friends was pregnant I would think I’m going to do it this time. I’m going to make them something. Well, you know how those things go. Life is often so busy that you don’t always have the time or area to work on those fun projects. When I heard that one of our young ladies at church was having a baby girl I decided to make a sweet girly baby quilt.

Finding Motivation
It’s amazing how more motivated you are to work on projects when you have a nice place to work in. Within the past year we’ve gotten the downstairs mostly finished and completely functional. My husband did a series on built-ins including a large counter top height work table for me. Yes, I will be posting about that at some point but he still has to finish building the doors and drawers on all the cabinets LOL. I used this space for the first time when I was making the Greek Dancer Vests and I found that it was so much easier to work down there. Before that I had been working on the dining table and had to have it cleaned off every time we needed to eat.
Inspiration
Of course I had to turn to Pinterest for inspiration. There are tons of beautiful baby quilts out there but I wanted something that was really eye catching but not terribly complicated. I ran across a picture of this quilt with no pattern or dimensions but there were plenty of comments underneath it on the source post that I used as a jumping off point.
I think I liked this one more than the rest because it was unique. I love the way the jelly roll style was rethought and put together to make something entirely new. Plus, the flower was super cute and looked doable. I took graph paper and worked out the layout as best I could. My husband worked out the flower shapes for me.
The strips are 1.5 inches with the wider pieces being 3.5 inches finished. The borders are .75 inches and the binding is 2 inches. This is very soft fabric that has a ton of give so my lines aren’t as straight as I would’ve liked them. Plus I’m still not as accurate as I’d like to be using the cutting wheel LOL. I used Swedish sewing paper to trace the shape of the flowers from the design that Robert worked up for me in order to make myself patterns pieces to cut with.
I wanted the flower to stand out from the quilt a bit so I made the petals like little pillows: two pieces of fabric with some batting in between. When I attached them to the quilt I sewed about and inch or so away from the edge of the petal. I though it would be a fun texture for the baby. The back of the quilt is soft minky fabric in a pastel galaxy pattern that coordinates with the binding. My oldest has requested a larger quilt with the same backing.
