It’s a win for everyone, really.

About 14 years ago we bought a little house which was in serious disrepair.  It had been in foreclosure for 7 years and had recently gone through mold abatement due to all the water leaks in the basement.  In the beginning, it was not livable. So, needless to say, we had our work cut out for us.

It was a pretty little block house with a brick facade, but it was showing its age.   When we were first looking at the house on a frigid day in February, I remember standing in the living room as the agent is looking out the large picture window and he says “That’s barely keeping out strangers” because it certainly wasn’t keeping out the cold. That being said, one of the first things we addressed was the windows.  Every one of the single pane casement windows in the main floor of the house needed replacing.

Above is the 6′ x 9′ picture window in the living room that was barely keeping out strangers.
Here is the window in the kitchen that had a view of a rock wall covered with a chain-link fence.
All the bedrooms had these windows.  They’re a nice size but certainly needed some updating.
Yes, this is a tub surround partially covering the window in the bathroom.
It took quite some work but we did replace all the windows in the house before we moved in. It’s unbelievable how much difference windows can make in the look of a room as well as the comfort level in the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
I really can’t say enough about this beautiful window.  It’s simple but lovely.  It’s the perfect place to put a Christmas tree.  It’s large enough for my babies (when the were babies) to climb into and squeal in excitement over the birdies in the bushes outside.  It’s also a great view to play our favorite winter snow storm game of who will make it up the hill.  May the odds be ever in your favor.
We decided to make this window smaller in order to fit a kitchen cabinet below it.
All the bedrooms got new windows too.
Look, it’s a full sized window in the bathroom.
This is just the beginning of our renovation, but replacing the windows has been one of the most important actions we have taken to improving our house.  I can’t imagine what our heating and cooling bills would have been if we had not made this change.  I hope that you will enjoy following the rest of our renovation as I share about it in future blog posts by hitting the subscribe button.
