It all started with my first baby who is now 17. Can I cry now? When you find out that you have Gestational Diabetes and Pre-Eclampsia with your first pregnancy, you learn how to cook to avoid having to take a ton of medication. The first thing I learned was that most packaged foods are loaded with sodium and sugar, meaning I couldn’t eat them. Goodbye tater tots. I needed to get myself some good cookbooks.
I started by picking up what has turned out to be my absolute favorite cookbook, The Family Health Cookbook put out by the American Medical Association. Being young and not exactly rolling in the dough, I started with the recipes with the fewest ingredients. This is how I built my spice and herb collection: one spice at a time. It doesn’t show in the picture but it has burn rings on the front from being laid on top of a still warm stove burner. You know it’s a well loved cookbook if it has a broken spine.

Once the kids came along I realized that I needed to instill in them the good eating habits that I just never learned. Although, in the past few years I have to admit that I’ve relaxed some of the restrictions and we do eat some junk food, just not all the time. Also, my middle child has figured out how to bypass the junk food limitations by learning how to bake. At 14 he can now bake both brownies and cookies. I’ve never been afraid to allow them to try making things on their own or try new things and I believe this has paid off for them.
There is one thing I need to admit: I tend to be a collector. This is just a small selection of my collection of cookbooks. Before the internet was the resource it is now there were cookbooks and recipe cards and at this point, I’ve amassed quite the collection. Now I have a small hoard of recipes on Pinterest. I must also admit that many of the recipes don’t follow any particular dietary guides. Here I will share some of these recipes from a variety of sources, some from a beloved cookbook, some from a favorite blogger or some that we have developed.
